The Misconceptions About LUTs That Are Killing Your Color Grade

August 26, 2026

LUTs are one of those tools that can make color grading much easier, but they’re also surrounded by a lot of misconceptions.

Are LUTs only for LOG footage? Can they fix poorly exposed footage? Should you use them in your camera? And are all LUTs created equal?

In the video below, I break down the most common misconceptions about LUTs and explain how to use them properly.

The 5 Things You Need to Know About LUTs

1. LUTs aren't only for LOG footage
There are two main types: conversion LUTs, which transform footage from one color space/gamma to another (such as LOG to Rec.709), and creative LUTs, which give your footage a specific look or style.

2. Don't use just any LUT in your camera or monitor
When shooting LOG, a conversion LUT can help you accurately monitor what your footage will look like after conversion. Creative LUTs are generally better left for the editing stage.

3. A LUT can't fix bad footage
Incorrect exposure, bad white balance, clipped highlights, and crushed shadows need to be addressed through color correction. A LUT can transform your footage, but it can't save it.

4. Not all LUTs are created equal
Two LUTs designed for the exact same camera profile can produce very different results. Contrast, saturation, highlight handling, shadows, and color reproduction can all vary.

5. LUTs aren't imported like video files
A LUT is essentially a set of color-transformation instructions. Once installed in your editing software, it's available whenever you need it. You simply apply it to your footage and adjust the intensity.
